Hollywood.com Says: Loaded with laughs but short on action, this big-budget sequel feels less like a comic book flick and more like a superhero version of ‘Arthur.’

Iron Man 2, Jon Favreau’s much-anticipated follow-up to his breakthrough 2008 blockbuster, is less a comic book flick than it is a superhero version of Arthur, the Oscar-nominated 1981 comedy that starred Dudley Moore as a drunken, wise-cracking dilettante. In his second turn as Tony Stark, Robert Downey Jr. recasts the billionaire inventor as the Dean Martin of industrialists, strutting from one star-studded event to another on a bacchanalian victory tour, dishing out choice one-liners and stirring up minor controversies for his exasperated babysitters, Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) and James “Rhodey” Rhodes (Don Cheadle), to quell. Whether gloating about his achievements at a defense industry expo, upbraiding Senators during a congressional hearing, or getting wasted and donning his armored powersuit to play DJ at his birthday party, there’s no telling what kind of madcap mischief Tony Stark will get himself into next!

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief

THE STORY

Teenager Percy Jackson (Lerman) discovers that his real father is Poseidon, god of the sea, and that he has also been accused of stealing the lightning bolt belonging to Zeus, god of all gods.

But after a stint in demigod training camp Percy is soon off on a road trip with fellow demigod Annabeth (Daddario) and his satyr protector Grover (Jackson), to clear his name, to rescue his mother and recover Zeus’s all-powerful lightning bolt.

VERDICT

This action-packed fantasy adventure, based on Rick Riordan’s hit Percy Jackson and the Olympians series of books, is great fun, and deserves to find an audience with teens now bereft of any Harry Potter magic.

As an added bonus there’s game old Pierce Brosnan as a heavily-bearded centaur – half man and half horse playing the “tough, but compassionate” teacher who helps young Percy realise his demigod status. Add to the pot a sultry Uma Thurman as the deadly Gorgon Medusa, Sean Bean as Zeus and Steve Coogan as Hades, Lord of the Underworld, and you have a movie with a lot of good stuff going for it. Dear JohnLOS ANGELES — Romantic tearjerker “Dear John” overcame scathing reviews to end “Avatar’s” seven-week reign at the top of the North American box office this weekend, estimated figures showed Sunday.

The film, an adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel about a soldier who falls in love with a college student, stormed to an impressive 32.4 million dollars on its debut, box office tracker Exhibitor Relations said.

The movie, starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried, has received largely negative reviews but proved too strong for science-fiction epic “Avatar,” the highest-grossing film in history with more than two billion dollars worldwide.

James Cameron’s film, which last week scooped nine nominations for next month’s Oscars, earned another 23.6 million dollars to add to its record-breaking haul.

Action film “From Paris With Love,” starring John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, opened in third spot with a disappointing 8.1 million dollars.

In fourth spot was revenge thriller, “Edge of Darkness”, featuring Mel Gibson in his first major screen role since 2002.

The film about a hard-bitten Boston cop hunting his daughter’s killers earned seven million dollars in its second weekend.

Dwayne Johnson comedy “The Tooth Fairy,” fell to fifth place in its second week of showing, with 6.5 million dollars in box office receipts, with 34.3 million dollars in total.

Romantic comedy “When in Rome,” starring Kristen Bell as a New Yorker seeking love in the Eternal City was sixth with 5.5 million dollars. Read the rest of this entry »

The Wolfman

The Wolfman

The story follows a man who returned to his homeland from America only to be bitten by a werewolf before himself enjoying predatory nocturnal ramblings.

Inspired by the classic Universal film that launched a legacy of horror, “The Wolfman” brings the myth of a cursed man back to its iconic origins. Oscar® winner Benicio Del Toro stars as Lawrence Talbot, a haunted nobleman lured back to his family estate after his brother vanishes. Reunited with his estranged father (Oscar® winner Anthony Hopkins), Talbot sets out to find his brother…and discovers a horrifying destiny for himself.

Lawrence Talbot’s childhood ended the night his mother died. After he left the sleepy Victorian hamlet of Blackmoor, he spent decades recovering and trying to forget. But when his brother’s fiancée, Gwen Conliffe (Emily Blunt), tracks him down to help find her missing love, Talbot returns home to join the search. He learns that something with brute strength and insatiable bloodlust has been killing the villagers, and that a suspicious Scotland Yard inspector named Aberline (Hugo Weaving) has come to investigate.

As he pieces together the gory puzzle, he hears of an ancient curse that turns the afflicted into werewolves when the moon is full. Now, if he has any chance at ending the slaughter and protecting the woman he has grown to love, Talbot must destroy the vicious creature in the woods surrounding Blackmoor. But as he hunts for the nightmarish beast, a simple man with a tortured past will uncover a primal side to himself…one he never imagined existed.
